RESILIO | BRING YOUR ROOF TO LIFE

With the RESILIO project, 10.000 m² of smart blue green roofs are being realized in Amsterdam. This is necessary because it rains more often and harder, as well as getting hotter. Excess rainwater is stored underneath the green layer of plants on the roof. The water can be retained or discharged with a smart valve connected to the weather forecast. This helps us to keep our feet dry and our heads cool. The roofs provide space for new nature, and that is good for the city. We bring roofs to life!

RESILIO - Waterberging

WATER RETENTION

The roofs are able to collect excessive rainwater and discharge this with a smart valve based on the weather forecast. In this way, we prevent wet feet on the street.

RESILIO - Verkoeling

COOLING

The water and plants cool the roofs and the environment in the hottest and driest months of the year.

RESILIO - Biodiversiteit

BIODIVERSITY

The extra water allows plants to grow better and to remain green. This is good for the biodiversity of plants, birds and insects.

SMART BLUE-GREEN ROOFS

We have already gained a lot of experience with blue-green roofs. A blue layer is put under the green layer consisting of vegetation. The blue layer is a reservoir in which rainwater can be stored. The water can be discharged through a “smart valve”. This smart valve responds to the weather forecast and opens and closes automatically at the right times. This is useful if, for example, a lot of rain is expected to fall. These roofs have shown that they can make a major contribution to water management in the city. After the first experiences, the time has come to enter the next phase and investigate how we can set up these roofs more widely in the city. We are now going to work with RESILIO on this.

The social housing roofs are located in five neighbourhoods in Amsterdam: Kattenburg, Oosterpark, Indische Buurt, Slotermeer and Rivierenbuurt. Private homeowners from any part of Amsterdam can join.

RESILIO - Wie

FOR WHOM

Most of the roofs are being realized on buildings owned by the social housing companies De Key, Stadgenoot and de Alliantie. Private homeowners can also have their own smart blue-green roof installed. A grant from the Municipality of Amsterdam is available from 2020 onwards.

RESILIO - Onderzoek

RESEARCH

Extensive research is being done into the effects of the roofs on climate, quality of life and health. The knowledge and experiences are shared with other European cities. In this way the technology and the process can also be applied across borders.

PARTNERS

The smart blue-green roof project RESILIO is a collaboration of the Municipality of Amsterdam, Waternet, MetroPolder Company, Rooftop Revolution, HvA, VU, Stadgenoot, the Alliantie, De Key and Consolidated.
